Memory Ride- Bicycle ride for Dementia Awareness

  • Sunday, October 9th 2016, beating the rains Hyderabad cycling enthusiastic came together for the cause of Dementia and to create awareness in the society and express their solidarity to persons with dementia and their families. In spite of the rainy weather close to 60 enthusiastic participated for the ride. The Memory Ride was organized as part of a series of events to mark World Alzheimer's Month 2016, by the Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) Hyderabad Deccan Chapter in association with Cycling India. The Memory ride which was conducted to spread the awareness of Dementia in society was supported by Memory Clinic at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Asha Hospitals and Yashoda Hospitals. Also it was supported by Continental Hospital with a mobile ambulance which supported the riders through the ride.
  • All the participants were given cycling back-packs with literature on dementia, difference between normal aging and ageing with dementia. at the registration Ms Bala Tripura Sundari, Joint-secretary ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan Chapter, briefed the participants on the Cause of Dementia and the Memory Ride. The event commenced at 6:30 am with a welcome address by Mr Shashidhar, treasurer ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan Chapter. He introduced ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan chapter, Ms Saadiya Hurzuk then spoke about the cause and the purpose of the ride. Rules and regulations of the ride were shared with the participants followed by warm up exercises for the cyclists by Mr Jitender Bansal, Founder Cycling India.
    The riders started out from the GHMC Bike station, Gachibowli and headed towards Lingampally road. There were water-stations for the riders all along the route where water and glucose was available if needed, after the 1st hydration point the riders enjoyed the lush green surroundings which made the ride even more pleasant. The ride proceeded towards Hyderabad Central University junction (5 kms point), where a u-turn was taken for the return stretch (10 km ride).
  • After the ride the participants enjoyed a hearty breakfast and refreshments, signed the Dementia pledge supporting the cause and finally participation certificates were handed out to all participants. The event concluded at 9:30 am.
