One day Meet of the Retired Irrigation Engineers

ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan has conducted an awareness programme from 3 - 4 pm at the One day Meet of the Retired Irrigation Engineers  on Dec 19, 2010 at The Institution of Engineers, Visvesarayya Bhavan, Khairatabad.

The session, attended by 300, commenced with Mr Shashidhar Komaravolu, Treasurer, ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan, giving  an Introduction of the Society and the services provided. Some of the services offered by the local chapter include awareness sessions, educative and caregivers literature in English and Telugu, counselling, home visits, monthly caregiver meetings, training for caregivers and volunteers and a Rehabilitation centre twice a week.

Dr K Chandrasekhar (Vice- President, ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan and Director, Division of Neuropsychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry at Asha Hospitals, Hyderabad), gave a power point presentation on Memory in Healthy Aging and Disease. He gave examples of Healthy memory and failing memory and explained how different areas like Attention, Memory, Language, Planning and execution, Behaviour, Visuospatial skills and learned motor skills will be affected by Dementia. A self portrait by William Uttermohlen was depicted to show the decline in a person’s skills after the disease.

He spoke about Dementia, symptoms, subtypes of Dementia and prevalence of Dementia.  Differences between normal forgetfulness and dementia were also spoken about. Keeping the brain active and early diagnosis can help slow down the progression of the disease.

Dr. Chandrasekhar answered the questions regarding memory loss.
